Est. 2010

Early 2010 we decided to leave the corporate world to pursue a slow lifestyle. We created birdcrumbs, a small studio where we divide our time between client projects and develop product concepts focused on all things slow.

We have 15+ years experience in design research & strategy, product development, interaction design, graphic design and R&D both in-house and consultancy working for Fortune 100 companies and startups in the USA, EU and Asia.

Clients include: HP Consumer Notebook, Sony Network Entertainment, HP Accessories, Mr. Steam, Sony Ericsson, various start-ups and collaborations with AEO Lab, DF-id, and SKETCH.

365 DAYS
PREFAB RESEARCH LAB

Summer 2011 we launched birdcrumbs’ Prefab Research Lab which offers our clients a 12-month subscription of our design research and strategy services for a reduced flat fee. We're all booked up for 2012, but 2013 is just around the corner! Get the details...

WINTER 2012
COLOR, MATERIAL & FINISH

2013 Color Material & Finish Development, USA

Came out of hibernation this winter sketching and developing CMF directions for one of our favorite {confidential} clients. People familiar with b'crumbs might be scratching their heads...CMF? We have fresh not fried eyes.

WINTER 2012
FOOD & GARDEN

Gentle Little Beasts: ladybug behavioral studies

The plan, spend winter in hibernation studying the behavior of a couple additions in the studio...ladybugs! Adopted 5 of these "gentle little beasts" as we call them (protectors of the studio garden) for the winter and observe their behavior.

What we've discovered is beyond our imagination, that ladybugs are curious creatures, have personality, clean as a cat, enjoy persimmons and have a painful bite. Project to follow.

FALL 2011
CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

UX/UI/Prototype development, USA

We love collaborations, birdcrumbs x AEO Lab are teaming up again! Our last collaboration was in 2007, it's about time we are up to no good! Update to follow...

SUMMER 2011
COLOR, MATERIAL & FINISH

2012 CMF Trend Research & Pattern Development, USA

Spending part of our summer developing a series of CMF themes based on emerging sociocultural trends identified by birdcrumbs which enabled us to understand the emotional values driving CMF trends. This led to color and pattern design with the HP Accessories team. You can purchase these accessories spring 2012!

SPRING 2011
HEALTH & WELL BEING

UI/ID Development, USA

birdcrumbs x DF-ID are letting off some steam, pun intended since we cannot discuss the project. We spent our spring collaborating on a project with our friends at DF-ID, they were in charge of the hardware and we took on the software. Product launch, spring 2012

SPRING 2011
FOOD & GARDEN

Happy Soil, a birdcrumbs production

Our second slow concept project has come to fruition! After making coffee, we usually toss the grounds away. But used coffee grounds mixed with crushed egg shells make great fertilizer for potted plants, container and urban gardens. We created an all natural, handmade fertilizer made from recycled ingredients. Happy Soil are dried, compact cubes which can be crumbled by hand onto the top soil of the planter or garden. Our cubes work in a closed-loop system, where viable waste are collected, recycled, and fed back into the plant ecosystem.

DESIGN EDUCATION

Instructor,INDEX:Design Challenge 2010-Design for Education
Design Matters, Art Center College of Design

The INDEX: Design Challenge has three sub-themes, combined with an open challenge:

Improved Education Facilities can improve life in obvious ways by making school an enjoyable experience while increasing learning ability by improving attention.

Sanitation and Hygiene improve life of students with a healthier environment, thereby reducing illnesses and absences.

Gender Parity in Education should ensure that girls get the same opportunity to go to school as boys and thereby improve their lives through equal opportunities, eliminating gender disparity in education.

FALL 2010
FOOD & GARDEN

Grub Crumbs, gourmet aritsan slow snacks

Our first slow concept project has come to fruition & continues to evolve. We were inspired by our past experience of unlimited junk food and sugary drinks available for consumption at the office.

Our solution, a series of non-baked raw/vegan snacks focusing on developing unique layered flavors and textures combining natural and organic ingredients manufactured by hand.

2011-12 Research & Strategy, JP

We spent two months in Japan conducting market research focusing on food consumption, anxiety, okane mochi mama's and gardening... not in that particular order.

LOCATION

A change of pace is good great! We split our time between Los Angeles, San Francisco, Hawaii & Japan. We discovered cubicles are overrated and find ourselves working outdoors enjoying the fresh air, warm sun and natural light which keeps us motivated and inspired.

MOTTO Mindfully productive.
